What Do You Think?

5:12 PM / Posted by Ray Lombardi /

Our post today will be a little different than usual. As I was looking through our list of worship songs yesterday it occurred to me that we have a fairly large list, with some songs dating back all the way to the start of the worship team back in 2000. Some of the songs are classics, some are really average, and some are, well, frankly, just bad! Here's what I'd like you to do . . . I'd like you to post your opinion(s) on the following:

1. The best worship song in our repertoire
a. Fast/upbeat song
b. Slow/Contemplative Song

2. The worst worship song in our repertoire

3. The most underused song in our repertoire

4. The most overused song in our repertoire

5. The best song you'd like to add to our repertoire

6. A hymn you'd like to add to our repertoire

You are welcome to add your comments, however, please respond by listing the answers according to the numbers listed above. (Everybody understand that??) It will be very interesting to see what your responses are. Your opinions will be taken into consideration for future scheduling. No "anonymous" comments please. Thanks!

Blessed Be Your Name/Awesome is the Lord Most High (the roof raisers, I tell you)

b. Slow/Contemplative Song

Nothing Without You (Bebo Norman song?)

Great God is really hard to sing--the slow and fast parts just don't work together, I am not sure it works as a corporate worship song.

Wow...If I were to be honest, I was really excited to see this blog post! Props to you for being open enough to discuss this...

At the same time, this is really tough because it is COMPLETELY subjective. I had this discussion with a friend recently, and noted that simply put, some songs mean more to one person than another. There are some songs we sing SEEMINGLY all the time that as soon as I hear that first note, I cringe. As soon as I mention the name of a song, it could cause someone else to...wait for it...GASP! (I felt this way when reading about All Because of Jesus - I love the song and feel like we never sing it, yet another awesome human being feels the opposite.)

Every ministry has their own songs that simply become part of their DNA. With the JH students, I could play Blessed King or Better Than Life or Oh Happy Day or Mighty to Save or From the Inside Out every last week and totally get away with it.

Sorry. I know I'm totally cheating in my response. Deal with it. Anyway, back to the issue...

1. Best Song
Fast: The Lord Reigns is definitely up there. Everlasting God as well. Lord You Are Good.
Slow: Mighty To Save. And though it's old, Power of your love tears the place up (as we saw Sunday).

2. Worst Song
Let My Words Be Few - though I like it, it has an odd sound to it (strange progression), and the last line of it is a little uncomfy for newbies. Even Matt Redman now looks back and says it's a bit odd for men to sing "I'm so in love with you" to a Jewish Rabbi circa 0-33AD. (Though granted, He is God.)
Also not a fan of the Center song (DRAGGY) or On Mountains High (What's with the Ocean Blue thing?). I also have issues when a song veers too far from the original.

3. Underused? Hmm...Beautiful One? Honestly I can't really think of too many...probably because they are underused. :)

4. Overused: Still, On Mountains High, From The Rooftops, and any other "staples."

5. New Songs: Yee-haw! Your Grace Is Enough, Sing Sing Sing (Tomlin), Reign (Starfield), Give Him Praise (Brewster), Salvation is Here (Hillsong), Oh Happy Day (Fee), Song Of Hope (Robbie Seay)...yeah, I'm just getting started.

6. Anything from the Passion: Hymns album. I love the arrangements - classic yet contemporary. Oh Worship The King or Joyful Joyful - priceless. Yeah, anything "modernized" by Tomlin or the other Passion guys is golden.

There...I have spoken my peace. How's that for brief and concise?

lol,
Jeremy

1. The best worship song in our repertoire
a. "We'll Make It Loud" and From the Rooftops ( but I think that we overplay it)
b. Like Eagles or Majesty (Here I Am) - Martin Smith

2. Great God

3. Better is One Day

4. Mighty to Save and Love the Lord

5. You Never Let Go - Matt Redman- Although I think that they may be in our repetoire in which case I'd move this answer to number 3.
New ones are easy though.

Make A Joyful Noise(I Will Not Be Silent) - David Crowder
When I Think About the Lord-Shane & Shane
Knockin on the Door of Heaven and Wonderful Maker- Matt Redman

6. Be Thou My Vision
