Well, today is one of those days for me that I would rather skip on the calendar. (I'm writing this on Monday, December 15th for those of you that won't catch up on the blog posts until your next vacation) Can you guess why? If you're on the plus side of twenty-five-years-old, you'll know why. That's right, it's my birthday. What happened to birthdays being something to look forward to? I've been dreading birthdays quite a few years now!

Is it fair? Did God play some cruel joke on us, to cause us to grow and mature, but as we grow and mature, to also start disintegrating? It's really sad that when I get together with some of my peers I spend more time talking about my ailments than anything else. Here's a few of the items on my list of things I can no longer do. . .

Stay up all night
Read without glasses
Touch my toes from a standing position
Avoid ear hair (I know, it's really gross)
Find any more brown hair on my head or beard
Eat anything without worrying about my cholesterol or weight
Remember anything at all after a week's gone by

So there you have it. It's not pretty. My only consolation is that all of you will someday join this non-exclusive club. And I have to tell you, there are a few, not many, advantages. You see, God knows what He is doing, and times things out in such a way so as to allow us to be of great usefulness to Him no matter how young or old we may be. The Bible abounds with examples at both ends - of God using children (Samuel, David, the boy with the loaves and fishes, to name a few) and also using more "mature" individuals - Moses, Zacharias and Elizabeth, etc., to accomplish His purposes here on earth. Whatever stage of life you happen to be in right now is not important - what is important is that "whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." (Colossians 3:17)

Retirement may be nice for those who look forward to a day of fishing or a ladies' knitting circle. With God there is no retirement - just more promotions. All of you that serve in the worship ministries with me play a critical role in God's mission here on earth. YOU are important! YOU are needed! You DON'T GET TO QUIT! (Just kidding, we'll let you out of your contract if you insist.) So enjoy the work that God has given you to do. And don't worry about that gray hair that popped out this morning and seems to be standing out like a inkspot on a white shirt - the Bible tells us that the "Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained by a righteous life." (Proverbs 16:31)
