I’ve never tried it, but I imagine that riding a unicycle is not all that easy. The closest I’ve ever come is to ride “no hands” on my bike, and usually I can only do that for a few seconds before I feel like I’m losing control. Besides, I feel like a little kid when I do that. From what I’ve read, (notice that I didn’t say what I’ve “tried”) the hardest part is learning to balance. You’ve got to be able to maintain your balance through a variety of conditions. I’ve seen people do this. They can go forward, backward, and almost come to a complete stop. It’s amazing!
I invite you to join me in learning to ride the unicycle of life. I’m discovering that the unicycle of life is all about balance as well. As a pastor, I’ve noticed that many of the problems that believers encounter on their Christian walk can be addressed by learning to balance. What are we striving for? A life of perfect balance. Our example? Jesus Christ. The issues? There are many. I started listing out some of the issues that demand balance in our lives:
Work vs. Relaxation
Doing vs. Being
Spending vs. Earning
Following vs. Leading
Learning vs. Teaching
Consuming vs. Producing
Community vs. Privacy
The list goes on and on. These are just some of the items that quickly came to mind. As you study the life of Christ, you immediately observe that he led a life of perfect balance. He knew when to work and when to rest. He knew when to appear in public and when to seek privacy. He knew when to chastise and when to praise. He knew when to be a teacher and when to simply be a friend.
As worship leaders we need this kind of balance. Not just as worship leaders, but simply as followers of Christ. Over the next few weeks I invite you to join me in learning to ride the unicycle. I want to walk (or should I say cycle?) through some of the issues that I struggle with, as perhaps you do as well. And if you have a particular area of your life in which you need balance, let us know, and we’ll add that to the list of those that we address. Let’s join those who have mastered the art of unicycling through life. Where to begin? Perhaps it is in making sure that our “equipment” is balanced as well. Next week we’ll take a look at what happens to the unicyclist when your wheel wobbles!

The all encompassing struggle of balance: "living in the world- but not of the world". I dont know even where to begin discussing this one!
